Our Right Whales…
At the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, even the exterior is unique. In the summer of 1993, renowned environmental artist Wyland was commissioned to paint one of his internationally famous "Whaling Wall" murals on the north wall of the Exhibition Hall. The expanded convention center was actually still under construction at the time.
Wyland created his sea life mural, a full 50 feet by 240 feet, choosing to feature the Right Whale, an endangered species, of which there are only 300 remaining worldwide. The mural was completed in one week, with Wyland doing all of the painting himself, with an airless spray gun. In addition to the right whales, also featured are bottlenose dolphins and loggerhead turtles.
