National Beta Club is the largest independent, non-profit, educational youth organization in America. And for more than 80 years, it has prepared today’s students to be tomorrow’s leaders.

To promote the ideals of academic achievement, character, service and leadership among elementary and secondary school students.

ACHIEVEMENT – Recognizing and honoring high academic achievement
CHARACTER – Preparing young people for life and empowering them to be successful
LEADERSHIP – Developing the leaders of tomorrow
SERVICE – Demonstrating our motto: Let Us Lead by Serving Others

Between the Junior Beta (grades 4-8) and Senior Beta (grades 9-12), the organization has helped nearly seven million students learn how to make a life for themselves—and, since 1991, it has awarded over $6 million in scholarships.

There are now more than 500,000 active members and more than 8,750 clubs nationally and internationally. It has become the nation’s largest independent, non-profit, educational youth organization.

Although there are some universal requirements, each chapter has its own criteria for selection. Junior Beta is divided into two divisions: Division I includes grades 4-5 and Division II includes grades 6-8. Senior Beta includes grades 9-12. Regardless of division, though, members adhere to the Beta mission and learn to embrace and embody its four pillars.

Beta’s mission originated with Dr. John W. Harris, a professor at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, who founded the organization in 1934. Over 80 years have passed, but his vision and Beta’s mission has remained the same. And most everyone who has been fortunate enough to be called a member has embraced those ideals and applied them to their own lives. From U.S. President Bill Clinton to current professional basketball player Kevin Durant, Beta members continue to lead long after their high school days are behind them.

Believing that exemplary student effort and achievement should be encouraged and rewarded, and seeking to cultivate the ideals of service and leadership in our citizens of tomorrow, the governing body of the National Honorary Beta Club has instituted this organization for the promotion of these ideals and those stated in the Beta Creed, among elementary and secondary school students. To implement this purpose, the following articles have been adopted.

    January 15, 2022 To January 17, 2022

In November of 2007, a team of dedicated volleyball players, coaches and volunteers met to discuss ways to better improve competitive volleyball in the Myrtle Beach area. Our goal was to start a junior club volleyball team for girls of the Grand Strand. After an overwhelming turnout for the team tryouts, Grand Strand Juniors was born as a not for profit volleyball program. The first year featured 3 travel teams with a total of about 30 girls. 2020 will be the start of our 12th season of competition. We have grown to 23 travel teams, 3 youth development teams, and over 240 young women now participating in our programs. We have changed the face of volleyball in our area and impacted the youth in a positive way.

The progress that our program and the players have made is incredible. Volleyball in the area has prospered greatly and we are making an impact on the entire state with multiple high school Region Champions, Lower State Champions, and State Champions . We have also graduated over 50 girls into college programs with many of them receiving partial and full scholarships. GSJ host two of the best tournaments in the Southeast with the Winter Bump Volleyball Classic, and the Coastal Classic Volleyball Championships. Between the two tournaments we are hosting over 400 teams and growing volleyball in the region and giving back to the community. Grand Strand Juniors is now competing with the best teams in the region and colleges are looking at our program for recruiting future college athletes.

Our simple goal of wanting to “Create Better Volleyball Players” has also extended into the Grand Strand community. The Winter Bump and Coastal Classic tournament have brought in millions dollars in revenue to local businesses in the month of January and June.

Grand Strand Juniors also took the step to join with other notable clubs to form the SAVL (Southeast Alliance Volleyball League), one of the country’s top power leagues. The SAVL gives Grand Strand Teams the opportunity to compete against other top teams and help our athletes achieve their volleyball goals.

    GSJ is making a difference.

    Our Story….

Denise’s worst and last day on Earth began as most days, loving and providing for her two little boys. January 17, 2008 was no different. While cutting her oldest son’s hair, Noah age 2, on the back porch of their North Port, Florida home, a predator named Michael King was cruising the neighborhood looking for opportunities. Denise Amber Lee was a 21-year-old loving mother of two boys, whose husband worked three jobs so that Denise could stay home and raise their children. Denise was abducted from the Lees’ rented home in North Port, Florida in the middle of the day. Somehow the intruder gained entry and control of Denise, who most likely saved her children’s lives. Denise’s father, Detective Rick Goff, was able to call on all area state, county and municipal law-enforcement agencies to search for Denise and her captor immediately following her abduction.

This was one of the most massive, cooperative search efforts that this area ever experienced.

In the hours that ensued, Denise fought mightily for her life. In her battle, she was able to use the captor’s cell phone to call 9-1-1, an act she thought would save her life, just like we are taught as children. She was not the only one to call 9-1-1 that day regarding this crime. There were at least four other calls, one from her distraught husband and three from eyewitnesses. One witness gave the local sheriff’s department an exact location of the crime happening right before her eyes. She stayed on the phone for more than nine minutes, identifying cross streets as she continued driving. Despite the fact that as many as four patrol cars were within a mile of the car in which Denise was fighting for her life, due to inefficiencies in the call center, none were dispatched.

Denise holding Noah and AdamOn the morning of January 19, 2008, a few heart-wrenching days after she went missing, her body was found. It is in memory of Denise and the tragedy that could have been prevented that this Foundation is formed. The Denise Amber Lee Foundation was founded by Denise’s loving husband, Nathan, who sought changes to a 9-1-1 system that failed her that day. The Foundation is here so no other person, family, or community has to endure the pure hell of a similar event and that no other children have to endure a lifetime without the comfort and guidance of their loving mother.

We envision a time when a citizen’s first call for help will be answered by a state-of-the-art 9-1-1 call center staffed with dedicated and highly trained professionals. A time when 9-1-1 will fail no-one.

The national attention garnered by this tragic case has allowed us to make considerable progress in the short time since Denise’s death. Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice, the largest community foundation in Florida, has partnered with us to lend its considerable resources and influence to our cause. This heart-breaking story has been featured on Dateline NBC, The Today Show on NBC and ABC’s 20/20. The Florida State Legislature was so moved by this story and testimony from Denise’s father, Detective Rick Goff, that the bill passed unanimously and was named in Denise’s honor.

God bless all the 9-1-1 professionals out there who care and are working so hard to keep us all safe. May God give them the strength and guidance needed to do their job to the best of their ability. Thank you for what you do!!!

The Denise Amber Lee Foundation was founded by Denise’s husband, Nathan Lee in June of 2008, 6 months after her tragic death. He has made it his life’s mission to travel the country telling her story, to help 911 centers across the country try to avoid a similar occurrence to someone else. The Denise Amber Lee Foundation mission is:

To support and Promote Public Safety through:

    Uniform training
    Standardized Protocols
    Defined Measurable Outcomes(Quality Assurance)
    Technological Advances to 911
The foundation wants to use the emotional power of Denise’s story to motivate and inspire 911 personnel to remember why they do what they do. Arguably one of the most difficult professions on the planet, the foundation wants to remind them how important they are what a critical role they play everyday in Public Safety.
