Monroe Hardware has been successful since 1886 by continuing its original business principle of guaranteeing customer satisfaction. William Henry Belk, one of the founders of Monroe Hardware company, was also the founder of the Belk department store chain which is now the largest group of family and management-owned department stores in the U.S. When he opened his first store in Monroe, NC, in 1888, Belk bought large quantities of goods, sold them at low mark-ups, and guaranteed customer satisfaction. His innovative ideas are still the primary business model at Belk and Monroe Hardware Company.

Throughout the years, the Belk family has continued its involvement and ownership in the hardware business in Monroe. W. H. Belk’s son, Irwin Belk, had served on the Board of Directors from 1951 until his death in 2018. Carl G. Belk, Irwin’s son, is Chairman of the Board. Monroe Hardware has grown from a local supply resource to a regional distribution company. It now serves eight states in the Southeast through a large sales force and truck fleet.

The key to our success has been our satisfaction and partnership with loyal customers, many of whom have served for several generations. We are committed to maintaining relationships of integrity, honesty, and fairness with our customers, our associates, and our vendors. Sixteen builders and suppliers from Horry and Georgetown County came together in 1969 with the goal of establishing a Home Builders Association. That goal was realized on October 10, 1969 when the Horry Georgetown Home Builders Association received its charter from the National Association of Home Builders.

Since its humble beginning, HGHBA has grown to 500 member firms representing all facets of the building industry. Builders, developers, remodelers, building material suppliers, subcontractors, financial institutions, real estate professionals plus many others who offer products and services for the homeowner and the industry.

HGHBA is proud of its record for promoting professionalism within the industry, providing education for the building industry and the homebuyer, as well as its commitment to community service.

    About Us
The Horry Georgetown Homebuilders Association (HGHBA) is a non-profit professional trade association representing residential and commercial builders, subcontractors, suppliers and many other service providers to the home building industry throughout Horry and Georgetown Counties.

Nearly fifty years ago, seven builders and eight associates came together to form the Horry Georgetown Home Builders Association. These charter members created the HGHBA to raise the level of professionalism in the building industry through education, advocacy and networking while offering the consumer fair housing prices.

Many of those original charter members who, in 1969, brought the vision to life are still active in the Association. They include builder, Larry Paul of LW Paul Construction; and associates, Santee Cooper, Horry Electric and Waccamaw Brick (now named Palmetto Brick).

In 1978, Rose Anne O’Reilly was hired as the first full-time Executive Officer for the HGHBA and still holds this position today.

The Horry Georgetown Home Builders Association is a non-profit professional trade association representing residential and commercial builders, subcontractors, suppliers and many other service providers to the home building industry throughout Horry and Georgetown Counties. These members, along with the organizations they represent, are the foundation for the building trade. They embrace the interaction, commitment, professionalism, education, community service and environmental responsibility necessary for a professional association.

Since its humble beginning, the HGHBA has grown to 500 member firms representing professional builders, developers, remodelers, building material suppliers, subcontractors, financial institutions, real estate professionals, and many others who offer products and services for the homeowner.

The Horry Georgetown Home Builders Association is proud of its record for promoting professionalism within the industry, providing education for both the builder and the homebuyer, and its ongoing commitment to community service.

    OUR STORY
Established by Frances P. Bunnelle in the year 2000, the Bunnelle Foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life for Georgetown County, SC residents. Efforts are focused on Mrs. Bunnelle’s primary concerns: meeting basic human needs, addressing the root causes of poverty, preserving the environment, promoting economic vitality, and encouraging positive youth development.

In 2016, the Foundation committed to narrowing its focus in a strategy we call Education to Career or E2C. We target efforts at the intersection of youth development and economic vitality. Our grantmaking still includes all five focus areas, but special consideration is given to entities working in those two areas.

Frances Bunnelle was a firm believer that people should care for one another according to their means. She quietly gave assistance to the disenfranchised and disadvantaged because she believed in the importance of community.

Mrs. Bunnelle created the Foundation in 2000 to support charitable causes serving Georgetown County, South Carolina. After her passing that same year, her trustees adopted the mission to improve the quality of life for County residents by concentrating on areas consistent with Mrs. Bunnelle’s values.

The first grants were made in 2003. Since then, more than $26 million has been distributed to worthy causes serving Georgetown County and the Foundation has served as a convener and thought leader in the community.
